Newnes Camp Ground and Industrial Ruins
I recently led a two night weekend away up at Newnes plateau which is situated in the Wolgan Valley 3hrs west of Sydney. Newnes is famous for the Shale mining Industrial ruins that has shaped its past. A few of us arrived on Friday night to enjoy the serenity of the bush and away from the hustle of the city. The rest of the group arrived by 10am on Saturday at the Newnes camping ground. Which is a large open plateau in the valley.
The views of the surrounding mountains are of the Capertee and Wolgan Valley. And two pit toilets are your bathroom connivence for your weekend stay. The camp site is un marked and generally there is plenty of space either side of the creek.
After the Glow Worm and Pagoda track walk we headed back to camp and walked over to the Ruins walk. It was a little disappointing due to the fires that had recently ripped through the area. With a lot of bare areas and sadly no animals in sight.
Newnes was named after Sir George Newnes he was the chairman of the Commonwealth Oil Corporation. During its busiest years it had a population of 800 in 1908. Eventually mining was moved to the more accessible Glen Davis which bought the start of its down fall.Â

Newnes hotel is now a private house. It maybe open to view the history and old relics of the working area back in the early 1900’s. You might be treated to “tea or coffee” and a Scotch Finger biscuit. There is accommodation on site which is cabin style, a fantastic weekend away for those that want a little more comfort.Â
On Sunday we broke camp around 9:30 and then headed down Wolgan Valley road to the Black Fellows Hand trail. For a interesting view of a aboriginal and natural site. that had interesting features of Monoliths and rock Pagodas.
